Musculus adductor
A large, powerful muscle of the medial thigh that adducts the hindlimb and assists in hip extension. Critical for stability and preventing the hindlimbs from splaying apart.
Origin: Ventral surface of the pelvis (pubis and ischium)
Insertion: Caudal surface of the femur and medial femoral condyle
Action: Adducts the hindlimb; extends the hip; stabilizes the hindlimb during stance
Innervation: Obturator nerve (L4-L6)
The adductor muscles are innervated by the obturator nerve, which can be compressed during foaling, causing adductor paralysis and hindlimb splaying ('splayleg') in post-partum mares.
