Atlas (C1)

Overview

The atlas is a ring-shaped vertebra with broad, wing-like transverse processes (alar wings). It lacks a vertebral body and spinous process. The atlas articulates with the occipital condyles of the skull (atlanto-occipital joint) allowing nodding (yes) movements, and with the axis via the dens (atlanto-axial joint) allowing rotation (no) movements. The alar notch transmits the vertebral artery and first cervical nerve.
