Bars (of the hoof)

Overview

The bars are the inward-turning continuations of the hoof wall at the heels that run parallel to the frog. They provide structural support to the heel region, help distribute weight, and contribute to the expansion and recoil of the hoof capsule during movement. Healthy bars are strong and well-defined; collapsed, overgrown, or weak bars can distort the hoof capsule and increase stress on internal structures. The bars work closely with the frog and digital cushion to maintain heel integrity and shock absorption. In horses with navicular syndrome or poor heel conformation, the bars are frequently weak or improperly loaded. This information is for educational purposes only. Always consult with a licensed veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment of your horse.
