Articulatio carpi
A complex joint composed of 7-8 small carpal bones arranged in two rows between the radius and cannon bone. Equivalent to the human wrist, not the knee. Contains three joint levels: radiocarpal, intercarpal, and carpometacarpal. A critical site of injury in racehorses.

Action: Absorbs concussion during locomotion; allows flexion and extension of the lower forelimb; the intercarpal joint has the most motion
The carpus is commonly injured in racehorses. Chip and slab fractures are treated arthroscopically.
A fracture through the full thickness of the third carpal bone (C3). More serious than chips. Common in Thoroughbred racehorses.
Degenerative joint disease of the carpus, often the end-stage of repeated chip fractures and chronic joint inflammation.
Small osteochondral fragments from the front of the carpal bones, very common in racehorses from hyperextension at speed. The third carpal bone and radial carpal bone are most frequently affected.
A fracture through the full thickness of the third carpal bone (C3). More serious than chips. Common in Thoroughbred racehorses. Signs include: Acute onset lameness during racing or fast work; marked carpal joint effusion; severe flexion test; diagnosed on radiographs (may need CT for full assessment); requires surgical repair with screws.
Degenerative joint disease of the carpus, often the end-stage of repeated chip fractures and chronic joint inflammation. Signs include: Chronic forelimb lameness; thickened, stiff knee; reduced range of flexion; hard bony swelling around the knee; may become career-ending.
Small osteochondral fragments from the front of the carpal bones, very common in racehorses from hyperextension at speed. The third carpal bone and radial carpal bone are most frequently affected. Signs include: Joint effusion of the knee; lameness after work; flexion pain; progressive if untreated; joint distension (puffy knee); confirmed with radiographs and arthroscopy.; Joint effusion (swelling of the knee); shortened stride; lameness worsening with exercise; flexion test positive; diagnosed on radiographs; often removed arthroscopically.
