Vertebra caudalis 3 (Cd3)
The third caudal (coccygeal) vertebra. Horses typically have 15-21 caudal vertebrae forming the tail. The proximal caudal vertebrae still have recognizable vertebral features (transverse processes, hemal arches), which become progressively reduced distally. The coccygeal vertebrae are surrounded by the powerful sacrocaudalis and intertransversarii muscles that control tail movement.

Action: Transmits hindlimb thrust to the vertebral column via the sacroiliac joint; anchors the pelvis
Caudal vertebral fractures can occur from falling backward. Reduced tail tone may indicate sacral or cauda equina pathology.
