Overview

A small muscle connecting the coracoid process to the humerus. Adducts the forelimb and assists in advancing the shoulder. Relatively small in horses compared to other species.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Coracoid process of the scapula

Insertion: Medial surface of the proximal humerus (teres major tuberosity)

Action: Adducts the shoulder; assists in protraction of the forelimb

Innervation: Musculocutaneous nerve (C6-C7)

Clinical Significance

Has a synovial bursa or tendon sheath at its tendon of origin. Small muscle contributing to shoulder extension and limb adduction.
