Overview

Adducts (closes) the arytenoid cartilage, working antagonistically to the CAD. Important for airway protection during swallowing and for vocalization.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Cranial lateral surface of the cricoid cartilage

Insertion: Muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage (ventral aspect)

Action: Adducts the arytenoid cartilage; closes the rima glottidis; protects the airway during swallowing

Innervation: Caudal laryngeal nerve (recurrent laryngeal nerve, CN X)

Clinical Significance

Part of the adductor group of intrinsic laryngeal muscles. All intrinsic laryngeal muscles except the cricothyroideus are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve; damage to this nerve (recurrent laryngeal neuropathy) predominantly affects the left side.
