Musculus flexor digitorum profundus
The hind limb equivalent of the forelimb DDFT. Passes over the sustentaculum tali of the hock and inserts on the coffin bone. Critical for hind hoof function and involved in hind limb navicular-type pain.
Origin: Caudal tibia, fibula, and proximal plantar tarsus
Insertion: Palmar/plantar surface of the distal phalanx (P3)
Action: Flexes the digit; supports the hind fetlock during stance
Innervation: Tibial nerve (L5-S2)
Inflammation of the tarsal sheath where the DDFT passes through the hock, causing visible swelling medial and lateral to the hock.
Hind limb DDFT lesions within the hoof are increasingly recognized with MRI as a source of chronic hind limb lameness.
Inflammation of the tarsal sheath where the DDFT passes through the hock, causing visible swelling medial and lateral to the hock. Signs include: Soft, fluctuant swelling on either side of the hock (medial and lateral); may or may not cause lameness; can indicate deeper hock pathology; cosmetic concern in show horses.
Hind limb DDFT lesions within the hoof are increasingly recognized with MRI as a source of chronic hind limb lameness. Signs include: Chronic low-grade hind limb lameness; may improve with palmar digital nerve blocks; worse on soft footing; often misdiagnosed as hock or stifle pain initially.
