It functions as a primary shock absorber, compressing with each stride to dissipate impact forces transmitted through the coffin bone and navicular apparatus. It also contributes to the hemodynamic pump that assists blood flow within the foot during weight-bearing and movement. A well-developed digital cushion provides resilience and support to the heel region. Poor development, atrophy, or chronic compression can reduce its effectiveness and contribute to increased stress on the navicular apparatus and coffin joint.
