Musculus extensor carpi radialis
The primary extensor of the carpus (knee). Essential for advancing the forelimb and part of the stay apparatus via the lacertus fibrosus connection from the biceps. One of the most important muscles for forelimb function.
Origin: Lateral supracondylar crest of the humerus
Insertion: Tuberosity on the dorsal proximal MC3 (cannon bone)
Action: Extends the carpus; part of the stay apparatus linking shoulder to carpus
Innervation: Radial nerve (C7-T1)
Damage to the radial nerve (from prolonged lateral recumbency during anesthesia, fractures, or kicks) paralyzes the entire triceps group.
Overuse strain of the tendon at its insertion on the cannon bone, seen in sport horses doing intense collected work.
Damage to the radial nerve (from prolonged lateral recumbency during anesthesia, fractures, or kicks) paralyzes the entire triceps group. Signs include: Dropped elbow; inability to extend the elbow and carpus; knuckling at the fetlock; horse cannot advance the limb normally; dragging the toe.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.; inability to extend the carpus and digits; the horse stands with the knee flexed and knuckled over; toe dragging; can occur without fracture from external compression.; inability to advance the limb
Overuse strain of the tendon at its insertion on the cannon bone, seen in sport horses doing intense collected work. Signs include: Swelling on the dorsal proximal cannon; pain on palpation at the metacarpal tuberosity; subtle lameness worse in collected gaits; may have heat at the dorsal knee area.
