Musculus gluteus medius

Overview

The largest muscle in the horse. Origin: Longissimus lumborum, gluteal surface of ilium, sacrum, sacroiliac and sacrosciatic ligaments. Insertion: Greater trochanter. Innervation: Cranial gluteal nerve. Function: Extends hip joint; abducts hindlimb. The principal extensor of the hip and a major propulsive muscle.

Action: Extends the hip joint; primary driver of propulsion; abducts the hindlimb

Clinical Significance

The gluteus medius is the largest muscle in the horse and the principal extensor of the hip joint. 'Hunter's bumps' (subluxation of the sacroiliac joint) can cause asymmetric atrophy of the gluteal muscles. The trochanteric bursa deep to the accessory gluteal tendon can become inflamed (trochanteric bursitis).
