The equine heart weighs 3.5-4.5 kg (about 1% of body weight) and beats 28-44 times per minute at rest. During maximal exercise, heart rate can reach 220-240 bpm, pumping up to 250 liters per minute. The heart has four chambers and the cardiac output capacity is a key determinant of athletic performance. Secretariat's heart weighed an estimated 10 kg - more than twice normal.
Auscultation on both sides of the thorax. A grade 1-2 flow murmur is common and often physiological in fit horses. ECG monitoring during exercise can reveal arrhythmias.
Irregular heart rhythm originating in the atria. Most common performance-limiting arrhythmia in horses.
Abnormal heart sounds caused by turbulent blood flow through valves or defects.
Catastrophic tearing of the aorta.
Inflammation of the heart muscle, often secondary to viral or bacterial infection.
Congenital hole between the ventricles. Most common congenital heart defect in horses.
