The hoof capsule is the complete rigid external structure of the equine foot, consisting of the hoof wall, sole, frog, and bars. It encloses and protects the coffin bone, navicular bone, and associated soft tissues while allowing limited expansion through the flexible frog and digital cushion. The shape and health of the hoof capsule reflect internal foot function, conformation, and loading patterns over time. Distortions of the hoof capsule, such as long toes, underrun heels, or contracted heels, are both causes and consequences of many foot problems. Maintaining a balanced hoof capsule through regular farriery is essential for healthy function of the podotrochlear apparatus and coffin joint. This information is for educational purposes only.
