Iliocostalis

Musculus iliocostalis

Overview

Lateral erector spinae member running along the rib angles. Stabilizes the ribcage, assists lateral flexion, and plays a role in respiratory mechanics.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Iliac crest and lumbar transverse processes

Insertion: Angles of the ribs and transverse processes of C7

Action: Laterally flexes the spine; assists inspiration by elevating the ribs

Innervation: Dorsal branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves

Common Conditions & Injuries

Rib-region muscle pain

Loaded during lateral work, tight circles, and jumping. Strain manifests as lateral trunk stiffness and girth sensitivity.

Rib fracture guarding

Kick injuries or falls fracture ribs, causing severe iliocostalis spasm to guard the injured area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rib-region muscle pain in horses?

Loaded during lateral work, tight circles, and jumping. Strain manifests as lateral trunk stiffness and girth sensitivity. Signs include: Girthiness; stiffness on one rein; reluctance to bend through the ribcage; skin twitching when palpated along the ribs; difficulty with lateral movements.

What is Rib fracture guarding in horses?
