Musculus iliocostalis cervicis
The cervical extension of the iliocostalis muscle, connecting the ribs to the cervical transverse processes. Part of the lateral column of the erector spinae.
Origin: Cranial borders of ribs 1-4
Insertion: Transverse processes of the last few cervical vertebrae
Action: Extends and laterally flexes the cervicothoracic junction
Innervation: Dorsal branches of cervical and upper thoracic spinal nerves

The junction where this muscle bridges the neck and thorax is a transition zone prone to stiffness and restricted motion. Signs include: Stiffness at the base of the neck; reduced lateral bending; resistance in the lower neck during lateral work; may contribute to girth-area sensitivity.
