Small muscles between the transverse processes of adjacent caudal vertebrae. Control fine lateral tail movements.
Origin: Transverse process of one caudal vertebra
Insertion: Transverse process of the adjacent caudal vertebra
Action: Lateral flexion of the tail between individual segments
Innervation: Caudal (coccygeal) spinal nerves
Fractures of the caudal vertebrae from tail-pulling, getting the tail caught in gates, or being sat on disrupt these muscles.
Fractures of the caudal vertebrae from tail-pulling, getting the tail caught in gates, or being sat on disrupt these muscles. Signs include: Abnormal bend or angle in the tail; pain on palpation of a specific point; swelling; crepitus; tail deviates at the fracture site; usually heals with rest.
