Musculus extensor digitorum lateralis
Extends the digit and assists in carpal extension. Runs along the lateral forearm and its tendon passes over the lateral carpus.
Origin: Lateral collateral ligament of the elbow and lateral tuberosity of the radius
Insertion: Dorsal surface of the proximal phalanx (P1)
Action: Extends the digit; assists carpal extension
Innervation: Deep branch of the radial nerve (C7-T1)
Wire cuts, fence injuries, or interference wounds can sever the extensor tendons on the dorsal cannon, preventing normal limb advancement.

Signs include: Inability to fully extend the digit; knuckling at the fetlock during protraction; visible wound on the front of the cannon or pastern; toe dragging.
