Musculus longissimus capitis
Extends from upper thoracic/cervical vertebrae to the skull's mastoid process. Critical for poll flexion and collection. Problems here significantly affect rideability.
Origin: Transverse processes of the first 2-3 cervical vertebrae
Insertion: Mastoid process of the temporal bone and wing of the atlas
Action: Extends the head; lateral flexion of the head and upper neck
Innervation: Dorsal branches of cervical spinal nerves (C1-C3)
Tension in the longissimus capitis affects atlas mobility and can cause headshaking-like symptoms.
Spasm contributes to poll stiffness from overflexion (rollkur training), dental issues, or ear/TMJ problems.
Upper cervical arthritis causes chronic longissimus capitis guarding and spasm.
Tension in the longissimus capitis affects atlas mobility and can cause headshaking-like symptoms. Signs include: Pain behind the ear on one side; head tossing; resistance to poll flexion; uneven ear carriage; responds to atlas manipulation.
Spasm contributes to poll stiffness from overflexion (rollkur training), dental issues, or ear/TMJ problems. Signs include: Resistance to poll flexion; head tilting; difficulty achieving round frame; ear pinning when asked to flex; headshaking; reluctance to accept bit.
Upper cervical arthritis causes chronic longissimus capitis guarding and spasm. Signs include: Gradual loss of head/neck flexibility; stiffness worse when cold; difficulty bending neck to both sides; stumbling from proprioceptive loss.
