Musculus longus colli
The deepest ventral neck muscle, lying directly on the cervical vertebrae. It is crucial for neck stability, flexion, and the telescoping movement of the neck during proper engagement. Often called the equine equivalent of core neck stabilizers.
Origin: Bodies and transverse processes of the first 6 thoracic vertebrae
Insertion: Ventral surfaces of cervical vertebral bodies C2-C6 and the ventral tubercle of the atlas
Action: Flexes the cervical spine; stabilizes the neck; facilitates the telescoping gesture
Innervation: Ventral branches of cervical spinal nerves (C2-C7)
Weakness or atrophy of the longus colli contributes to cervical vertebral instability (wobbler syndrome component) and poor neck posture.
Arthritis of the cervical facet joints causes reflex inhibition and atrophy of the longus colli.
Weakness or atrophy of the longus colli contributes to cervical vertebral instability (wobbler syndrome component) and poor neck posture. Signs include: Inconsistent head carriage; neck feels unstable when palpated; difficulty maintaining poll flexion; may contribute to or accompany cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (wobblers).
Arthritis of the cervical facet joints causes reflex inhibition and atrophy of the longus colli. Signs include: Stiffness in the neck; reduced range of motion; difficulty bending the neck laterally; crepitus or pain on cervical manipulation; progressive loss of neck muscle tone.
