Musculus orbicularis oculi
Circular sphincter muscle of the eyelids controlling blinking and protecting the eye. Dysfunction leads to corneal desiccation and ulceration, a veterinary emergency.
Origin: Medial palpebral ligament and surrounding orbital bone
Insertion: Skin of the eyelids (circular, returning to origin)
Action: Closes the eyelids; aids in tear drainage
Innervation: Auriculopalpebral branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
Better developed in the upper lid. Important for the blink reflex, which tests the function of the facial nerve (CN VII) and the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).
Inability to blink causes exposure keratitis and potential blindness. This is a veterinary emergency.
Involuntary spasm clamping the eye shut, usually from ocular pain (uveitis, corneal ulcer, foreign body).
Partial sustained contraction (squinting) is one of the most reliable pain indicators, scored in Horse Grimace Scale.
