Overview

Circular sphincter muscle of the eyelids controlling blinking and protecting the eye. Dysfunction leads to corneal desiccation and ulceration, a veterinary emergency.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Medial palpebral ligament and surrounding orbital bone

Insertion: Skin of the eyelids (circular, returning to origin)

Action: Closes the eyelids; aids in tear drainage

Innervation: Auriculopalpebral branch of facial nerve (CN VII)

Clinical Significance

Better developed in the upper lid. Important for the blink reflex, which tests the function of the facial nerve (CN VII) and the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).
