Podotrochlear Apparatus

Overview

The podotrochlear apparatus, also known as the navicular apparatus, is the integrated group of structures in the caudal heel of the equine foot that works together to manage force transmission and allow smooth movement of the deep digital flexor tendon. It includes the navicular bone, the navicular bursa, the deep digital flexor tendon at its gliding surface, the collateral sesamoidean ligaments, and the distal sesamoidean impar ligament. The navicular bone functions as a pulley, changing the direction of pull of the deep digital flexor tendon as it inserts on the coffin bone. Modern veterinary understanding emphasizes that this is a functional unit rather than isolated structures. Pathology in any one component, whether bone remodeling, bursal inflammation, tendon lesions, or ligament damage, can produce the clinical signs of caudal heel pain. MRI has shown that soft tissue injuries within the apparatus are often more clinically significant than changes visible on radiographs alone. This information is for educational purposes only.
