Skeletal System

Proximal Sesamoid Bone (Right Forelimb, Lateral)

Os sesamoideum proximale laterale

Overview

The lateral proximal sesamoid bone is one of two small pyramidal bones at the palmar aspect of the fetlock. Together with the medial sesamoid, they form the sesamoidean groove and anchor the suspensory apparatus. Fractures of these bones are common in racehorses and can be catastrophic if both sesamoids are involved.

Clinical Significance

Proximal sesamoid bones serve as fulcrums for the suspensory apparatus. Biaxial fractures are catastrophic, usually fatal injuries.

Common Conditions & Injuries

Sesamoiditis

Chronic inflammation and remodeling of the proximal sesamoid bones from repetitive loading and suspensory ligament traction.

Proximal sesamoid bone fracture

Fractures of the sesamoid bones at the back of the fetlock. Can range from small chip fragments to catastrophic biaxial fractures (both sesamoids, often fatal in racehorses).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sesamoiditis in horses?

Chronic inflammation and remodeling of the proximal sesamoid bones from repetitive loading and suspensory ligament traction. Signs include: Chronic low-grade forelimb lameness; pain on palpation of the sesamoid bones; positive flexion test; enlarged, remodeled sesamoids on radiographs; seen in young racehorses and sport horses.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.

What is Proximal sesamoid bone fracture in horses?

Fractures of the sesamoid bones at the back of the fetlock. Can range from small chip fragments to catastrophic biaxial fractures (both sesamoids, often fatal in racehorses). Signs include: Ranges from chip fractures (lameness, effusion) to catastrophic biaxial fracture (fetlock drops to the ground, complete breakdown, usually fatal on the track).; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.; Acute lameness; fetlock effusion; pain on palpation of the sesamoids; in catastrophic biaxial fractures: complete fetlock breakdown (fetlock touches the ground; emergency euthanasia usually required).

What are the clinical concerns for the Proximal Sesamoid Bone (Right Forelimb, Lateral)?

Proximal sesamoid bones serve as fulcrums for the suspensory apparatus. Biaxial fractures are catastrophic, usually fatal injuries.
