Musculus rectus abdominis
Origin: Lateral surface of costal cartilages 4-9. Insertion: Prepubic tendon and, via accessory ligament, on head of femur. Innervation: Local intercostal and ventral branches of lumbar nerves. Function: Abdominal press (defecation, micturition, parturition, expiration); flexes lumbar spine and lumbosacral joint. Contains approximately ten transverse tendinous inscriptions. Its attachment on the femoral head stabilizes the hip joint.

Insertion: Prepubic tendon and cranial pubis
Action: Flexes the trunk; supports abdominal organs; assists expiration; tilts pelvis during collection
Innervation: Ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar spinal nerves
Contains approximately ten transverse tendinous inscriptions. Its attachment on the femoral head via the accessory ligament stabilizes the hip joint. Rupture of the prepubic tendon (to which rectus abdominis attaches) can occur in late pregnancy in mares.
Most common in late-gestation mares carrying heavy foals. The prepubic tendon (insertion of rectus abdominis) ruptures, causing the abdominal floor to drop catastrophically.
Weak rectus abdominis cannot properly flex the thoracolumbar spine, leaving the back unsupported. This is the primary 'core muscle' targeted in equine rehabilitation.
Most common in late-gestation mares carrying heavy foals. The prepubic tendon (insertion of rectus abdominis) ruptures, causing the abdominal floor to drop catastrophically. Signs include: Severe ventral edema extending forward from the udder; dramatically dropped abdomen; reluctance to move; pain; inability to foal normally; often requires euthanasia in severe cases.

Signs include: Hollow back posture under saddle; inability to engage hindquarters; poor collection; topline wasting; chronic back pain that improves with targeted core conditioning exercises.
