Musculus quadriceps femoris -- rectus femoris

Overview

The only quadriceps head crossing both the hip and stifle joints. Flexes the hip while extending the stifle. The most commonly strained component of the quadriceps group.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Ilium, cranial to the acetabulum (hip socket)

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligaments

Action: Extends the stifle; flexes the hip

Innervation: Femoral nerve (L4-L5)

Clinical Significance

Part of the quadriceps femoris group. Crosses both hip and stifle joints. Upward fixation of the patella can be associated with quadriceps weakness.
