Overview

Connects the cervical spine to the scapula, helping to elevate and stabilize the shoulder blade. Part of the extrinsic forelimb musculature that forms the muscular sling suspending the thorax between the forelimbs.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Funicular part of the nuchal ligament (over cervical vertebrae C2-C5)

Insertion: Medial surface of the scapular cartilage

Action: Elevates and retracts the scapula; supports the trunk between the forelimbs

Innervation: Ventral branches of cervical spinal nerves (C4-C6)
