Overview

A massive fan-shaped muscle forming the primary sling suspending the trunk between the forelimbs. Horses have no clavicle, so this muscle bears the full weight of the thorax. It is one of the most important muscles in equine biomechanics.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Lateral surfaces of ribs 1-9 (serrated, saw-tooth pattern)

Insertion: Serrated face of the scapula (medial surface)

Action: Supports the trunk between the forelimbs; rotates the scapula during locomotion; absorbs concussion

Innervation: Long thoracic nerve and ventral branches of cervical nerves (C5-C7)

Clinical Significance

The serratus ventralis (cervicis and thoracis together) is the principal suspensor of the trunk between the forelimbs (synsarcosis). There is no bony articulation between forelimb and trunk in the horse. Weakness or damage affects the horse's ability to support the trunk.
