Superficial Digital Flexor (Hind)

Musculus flexor digitorum superficialis

Overview

The hind limb SDFT. In the hind limb, it is more tendinous and forms part of the common calcanean tendon (with gastrocnemius). Passes over the calcaneus and functions as part of the reciprocal apparatus. Less commonly injured than the forelimb SDFT.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Supracondylar fossa of the distal femur

Insertion: Proximal and middle phalanges (P1 and P2) of the hind limb

Action: Flexes the digit and fetlock; extends the hock; part of the reciprocal apparatus

Innervation: Tibial nerve (L5-S2)

Common Conditions & Injuries

Hind SDFT tendinitis

Less common than forelimb SDFT injury but still occurs, particularly in dressage horses doing intense collected work and in barrel racing horses.

Calcanean tendon disruption

Combined injury to the SDFT and gastrocnemius tendons at the hock level is catastrophic.
