Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon (SDFT)

Overview

The superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) runs down the palmar aspect of the equine limb superficial to the deep digital flexor tendon. It originates from the superficial digital flexor muscle and inserts primarily on the proximal aspect of the middle phalanx (P2), with some fibers continuing distally. The SDFT functions to flex the fetlock and pastern joints and provides elastic energy storage during locomotion. While the SDFT is less directly involved in the navicular region than the DDFT, injuries to the SDFT in the pastern and fetlock can alter overall limb biomechanics and indirectly affect loading of the foot. It is commonly injured in the mid-cannon region in performance horses. This information is for educational purposes only.
