Musculus thyroarytenoideus

Overview

Forms the body of the vocal fold. The vocalis portion tenses and adducts the vocal fold for phonation (neighing, nickering). Also helps close the airway during swallowing.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Inner surface of the thyroid cartilage (near the ventral midline)

Insertion: Muscular process and body of the arytenoid cartilage

Action: Adducts and tenses the vocal fold; phonation; assists airway closure

Innervation: Caudal laryngeal nerve (recurrent laryngeal nerve, CN X)

Clinical Significance

The vocalis muscle forms the body of the vocal fold. In cases of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy, atrophy of this muscle contributes to the collapse of the arytenoid cartilage. Ventriculocordectomy involves removal of the vocal fold tissue.
