Musculus thyroarytenoideus
Forms the body of the vocal fold. The vocalis portion tenses and adducts the vocal fold for phonation (neighing, nickering). Also helps close the airway during swallowing.
Origin: Inner surface of the thyroid cartilage (near the ventral midline)
Insertion: Muscular process and body of the arytenoid cartilage
Action: Adducts and tenses the vocal fold; phonation; assists airway closure
Innervation: Caudal laryngeal nerve (recurrent laryngeal nerve, CN X)
The vocalis muscle forms the body of the vocal fold. In cases of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy, atrophy of this muscle contributes to the collapse of the arytenoid cartilage. Ventriculocordectomy involves removal of the vocal fold tissue.
Atrophy of the thyroarytenoideus contributes to vocal fold collapse during exercise, adding to airway obstruction in horses with laryngeal hemiplegia.

Signs include: Exercise-induced respiratory noise; worsens with speed; diagnosed on dynamic overground endoscopy; may require ventriculocordectomy (vocal fold stripping) alongside tie-back surgery.
