Tibia
The tibia is the major weight-bearing bone of the gaskin (crus), extending from the stifle to the hock. The tibial crest is a prominent ridge on the proximal cranial surface. The medial malleolus and lateral cochlear surface of the distal tibia form the proximal articular surface of the tarsocrural (hock) joint. The tibial tuberosity is the insertion point of the patellar ligaments.
The tibia is subcutaneous medially. Stress fractures are common in racehorses and best diagnosed with nuclear scintigraphy.
Physitis of the distal tibia (young horses)
Complete fractures are usually catastrophic in adults. Spiral fractures occur from rotational forces. Foals have better prognosis with surgical repair.
Incomplete fractures of the tibia from repetitive concussion, most common in racehorses. The caudal tibial cortex is typically affected.

Signs include: Hindlimb lameness that worsens with exercise; localized pain on tibial palpation; may have heat and soft tissue swelling; diagnosed on nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) before visible on radiographs.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.
