Triceps Brachii (Long Head)

Musculus triceps brachii caput longum

Overview

The only triceps head that crosses both the shoulder and elbow joints. The most powerful of the three heads. Extends the elbow and flexes the shoulder simultaneously.

Anatomical Details

Origin: Caudal border of the scapula

Insertion: Olecranon process of the ulna (point of the elbow)

Action: Extends the elbow; flexes the shoulder; major weight-bearing muscle

Innervation: Radial nerve (C7-T1)

Common Conditions & Injuries

Long head triceps strain

The long head bears the greatest load during landing from jumps and during collected work. Strain causes significant forelimb dysfunction.

Olecranon fracture

Fracture of the point of the elbow from direct trauma (kicks, falls). Important because the triceps inserts here - fracture means the horse cannot lock the elbow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Long head triceps strain in horses?

The long head bears the greatest load during landing from jumps and during collected work. Strain causes significant forelimb dysfunction. Signs include: Acute forelimb lameness after jumping or intense work; visible swelling behind the shoulder; pain on palpation of the caudal arm region; reluctance to fully extend the elbow; 'dropped' elbow appearance in severe cases.

What is Olecranon fracture in horses?

Fracture of the point of the elbow from direct trauma (kicks, falls). Important because the triceps inserts here - fracture means the horse cannot lock the elbow. Signs include: Dropped elbow; inability to bear weight; swelling at the point of the elbow; the elbow cannot be extended; usually requires surgical repair with plates and screws.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.; Complete inability to bear weight on the forelimb; dropped elbow; severe pain at the point of the elbow; visible swelling; horse holds the limb flexed and cannot advance it normally.
