Let's get something straight right off the bat. Cribbing is not something your horse picked up because he watched the horse next door doing it. That old wives' tale about cribbing being "contagious" has been pretty thoroughly debunked by research. Horses don't learn to crib by observation. What actually happens is far more interesting, and honestly, kind of sad.

The frequency can be startling. Researchers at Cornell documented horses cribbing up to 600 times per hour during peak bouts. That's ten times a minute. Here's where things get complicated, though. Calling it "no obvious function" doesn't mean it serves no purpose for the horse. That distinction matters enormously.

Vice or Coping Mechanism?

For decades, horsemen called cribbing a "stable vice," lumping it in with biting, kicking walls, and other undesirable behaviors as though the horse was just being naughty. Punish it. Strap something on his throat. Make it impossible. Problem solved, right?

Not exactly. Research from multiple institutions has shifted our understanding dramatically. Cribbing appears to be a coping mechanism, the horse's way of dealing with stress, discomfort, or an environment that doesn't meet its behavioral needs. Studies at Texas A&M and elsewhere have found that cribbing releases endorphins in the horse's brain. The behavior literally makes the horse feel better. When researchers have prevented cribbing in confirmed cribbers, cortisol levels (a stress hormone) actually increased. Think about that for a second. Taking away the coping mechanism made the horse MORE stressed, not less.

UC Davis published work showing that cribbing horses had altered dopamine receptor profiles compared to non-cribbing horses, suggesting neurological differences that may predispose certain animals to developing the behavior. This isn't a horse being bad.   • Concentrated diets. High-grain, low-forage diets, basically the opposite of what the equine digestive system evolved to handle, increase risk. Grain produces a rapid spike in volatile fatty acids in the stomach, which may contribute to gastric discomfort and trigger cribbing as a self-soothing response.
  • Social isolation. Horses are herd animals. Keeping them alone without visual or physical contact with other horses is stressful, and inadequate stall sizing compounds the problem. Their prey animal instincts drive them toward the safety of a group. A horse alone in a stall with solid walls is a horse under chronic low-grade stress whether it shows it or not.
  • Genetics. Some breeds, particularly Thoroughbreds, appear predisposed. There may be a hereditary component to the neurological pathways involved. Texas A&M research has identified potential genetic markers associated with dopaminergic system variations in cribbing horses, though this work is still preliminary.

Notice a pattern? Most of these factors involve restricting natural horse behavior. Horses evolved to walk 15-20 miles a day, graze for 16+ hours, and live in social groups. Management Strategies That Actually Help

If your horse cribs, here's the honest truth: you probably won't eliminate it entirely. Once established, the neural pathways are deeply ingrained. But you can reduce the frequency and address the underlying causes.

Maximize turnout. This is number one for a reason. More time on pasture means more time doing what horses are supposed to do: walking, grazing, socializing. Many cribbers reduce or stop the behavior entirely when given 24/7 turnout. Not all of them. But enough that it should always be the first thing you try.

Increase forage. Slow feeders, hay nets with small openings, multiple small hay meals throughout the day: anything that extends chewing time and keeps the gut buffered. The goal is mimicking the near-constant forage intake horses would have in a natural setting. The AAEP recommends that horses receive a minimum of 1.5% of body weight in forage daily, but cribbers may benefit from even higher amounts offered over longer periods.

Address gastric health. Talk to your vet about scoping for ulcers. If ulcers are present, treatment with omeprazole often reduces cribbing behavior. Some horses that start cribbing due to ulcers will stop entirely once the ulcers heal, especially if the behavior hasn't been established for long. The Cribbing Collar Debate

And they work, mechanically speaking. A properly fitted cribbing collar prevents or reduces the physical act of cribbing in most horses.

But here's the question nobody wants to sit with: should you use one?

Remember that cortisol study? When you prevent cribbing without addressing the underlying cause, the horse is still stressed. He still wants to crib. He just can't. Surgical and Other Interventions

Modified Forssell's surgery, which involves cutting specific muscles and nerves in the ventral neck, has been used in severe cases. But if a horse in your care starts cribbing, the first question shouldn't be "how do I stop this?" It should be "what is this horse trying to tell me?"
