The Running Walk: Understanding Gaited Horse Movement
Forget everything you know about walk, trot, canter. Gaited horses rewrite the rulebook. Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Fox Trotters, Paso Finos, Icelandics, and a whole constellation of other breeds have been selectively bred for centuries to produce gaits that would short-circuit a warmblood's brain. Ride a good running walk once and you'll understand the addiction. It's immediate. Irreversible.
The Running Walk
The running walk is the Tennessee Walking Horse's signature, and nothing else quite matches it. Mechanically it's a four-beat lateral gait sharing the same footfall sequence as a regular walk: left hind, left front, right hind, right front. The difference is speed. A normal walk covers about 4 mph. A quality running walk hits 6 to 12 mph. Exceptional individuals push past 14.
Speed alone doesn't make a running walk. The whole horse changes. The head nods deeply and rhythmically, far more pronounced than at a regular walk. The ears flop loosely with each stride (Walking Horse people watch for this specifically). Hind feet massively overtrack, landing 12 to 18 inches beyond the front hoof print. And through all of it, the back stays glass-smooth. You barely move in the saddle. Like sitting in a rocking chair bolted to a conveyor belt.
This gait exists for practical reasons. Plantation owners in the antebellum South rode 30 miles a day inspecting property. They needed speed without the jarring two-beat bounce of a trot. The running walk delivered exactly that. Your spine survived.
The genetics trace to a DMRT3 gene mutation identified by Lisa Andersson's research group at Uppsala University and now widely studied by UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Horses carrying certain variants are neurologically wired for lateral gaits instead of the standard diagonal trot. Training refines the gait. It doesn't create it. You cannot teach a Quarter Horse to running walk. The hardware simply isn't installed.
The Fox Trot
Missouri Fox Trotters do something different. The fox trot is diagonal, like the trot, but with offset timing. The front foot lands a beat before the diagonal hind. In a normal trot, left front and right hind strike simultaneously. In a fox trot, the front arrives first.
That timing shift eliminates suspension. No moment when all four feet leave the ground means no bounce. The horse covers 8 to 10 mph while the rider sits there looking unbothered. Front end walks. Back end trots. That's oversimplified but captures the visual.
The hind hooves slide forward into their landing rather than stepping cleanly down, producing that characteristic "slipper" look. Head nod is present but subtler than a Walking Horse's.
Trail riders worship Fox Trotters, and rightly so. Bred in the Ozark Mountains for rocky, rough terrain at sustainable pace, they remain outstanding trail horses: sure-footed, sensible, willing, and smooth enough that your back still works at sunset. The U.S. Forest Service used them as official trail horses for decades. Not a coincidence.
The Paso Fino Gaits
Paso Finos take the concept further. Bred in the Caribbean from Spanish stock the conquistadors brought over, they perform a four-beat lateral gait at three distinct speeds: classic fino, paso corto, and paso largo.
Classic fino is mesmerizing. The horse moves with incredibly rapid, incredibly short steps, feet barely leaving the ground. It looks like vibration. At shows, riders cross a sounding board (wooden platform) and judges listen for perfectly even, rapid four-beat rhythm. The sound should be a machine-gun rattle of hooves. Metronomic. Any irregularity gets marked down.
Paso corto is the trail gait, moderate and comfortable. Where most owners spend their time. Paso largo pushes to maximum speed while maintaining the same lateral four-beat pattern. All three gaits share identical footfall sequence and timing. Only stride length and speed change.
Walking Horses emphasize reach and massive overtrack. Paso Finos emphasize rapidity and evenness with less overstep. Both are four-beat lateral gaits. The expression couldn't be more different. Side by side, you'd never confuse them.
The Rack and Stepping Pace
Five-gaited American Saddlebreds perform the rack: fast, flashy, four-beat, each foot striking independently with even spacing. It can reach serious speed and is the showstopper in performance classes. More elevated than the running walk. More "up and down" versus "forward and gliding." The best rackers look like they're flying apart at the seams while staying perfectly composed. Controlled chaos.
The stepping pace sits nearby but with more lateral timing. Legs on the same side move almost (not quite) together. A true pace is two-beat lateral, both same-side legs moving simultaneously, and it's genuinely unpleasant to ride. The stepping pace breaks that timing just enough for comfort. Icelandic horses perform their version, the tölt, which gets people flying to Reykjavik with checkbooks open.
The Tölt
These little North Atlantic horses have been tölting for over a thousand years, isolated on their island with zero outside genetic influence since the 10th century. The tölt is a four-beat lateral gait, same basic pattern as the running walk, performed anywhere from slow to genuinely fast. A good tölter at speed will make your jaw drop. Like watching a freight train float.
Many Icelandics also perform a flying pace, a two-beat lateral gait at racing speed exceeding 30 mph. Pace racing is enormous in Iceland and Scandinavia. So this 13- to 14-hand horse can walk, trot, canter, tölt, AND pace. Five gaits. No other breed reliably produces the full set.
The Icelandic breeding community scores each gait individually during evaluations. Uneven tölt timing or inability to cleanly separate gaits means lower marks. A millennium of this selection pressure is why the modern Icelandic horse tölts so reliably. The gene pool has been hammered into shape.
Common Misconceptions
Gaited horses CAN trot and canter. They aren't missing these gaits. They have additional gaits that replace the trot as the default intermediate gait. Most gaited horses will trot if pushed, and virtually all canter normally. The special gait replaces the trot in practical use. Doesn't eliminate it.
Not all "smooth" means "gaited." Some non-gaited horses just have butter trots. And some gaited horses perform their gaits poorly. Pacey, uneven, uncomfortable. Quality matters within gaited breeds as much as anywhere else. A bad running walk is no picnic.
Gaited horses need proper training and maintenance. A Walking Horse ridden without guidance might develop a pace instead of a running walk, or drift into something vaguely shuffly that isn't really any defined gait. Correct riding, proper hoof care, and fitness work preserve gait quality. Hoof angles literally determine whether some sensitive horses produce a clean running walk or a lateral pace (AAEP guidelines). Shoeing angle is that powerful.
And the soring issue. It must be addressed. The Tennessee Walking Horse show world has been plagued by the practice of soring: deliberately causing pain to front feet to produce an exaggerated "Big Lick" gait. The USDA Horse Protection Act prohibits it. The AAEP condemns it. Enforcement remains inconsistent and the practice persists in some circles. This is not natural gait expression. It's abuse. The flat-shod Walking Horse community has worked hard to separate themselves from it, and they deserve recognition for that effort.
The gaited world is its own universe with its own vocabulary, culture, and standards. If you've only ever ridden walk-trot-canter horses, try a gaited horse. It'll permanently rewire what you think legs can do.

Is the running walk hard on a horse's joints?
