Leg Wrapping and Bandaging: When to Use Them and When to Skip It

I watched a well-meaning barn volunteer wrap a horse's front legs once. She pulled the bandage tight at the top, left it loose in the middle, and finished with a knot directly over the cannon bone. That horse wore those wraps for about six hours overnight. By morning, one leg had noticeable filling and the horse was off at the trot. Bandage bow. From a single night of bad wrapping.

Leg wraps are one of those things in the horse world that everyone has an opinion on and not enough people actually understand. They look simple. Roll of fabric, wrap it around a leg, done. But the equine lower limb is an unforgiving structure. There's almost no muscle below the knee or hock. Just tendons, ligaments, bone, and skin stretched over all of it with minimal padding. Uneven pressure in the wrong spot doesn't have a thick muscle belly to absorb it. The tendon takes the hit directly.

Quick Answer: Leg wraps serve real purposes: reducing swelling, protecting during shipping, supporting healing injuries. But incorrect application creates more problems than it solves, including potentially career-ending tendon damage called bandage bow. If you're not confident in your technique, boots are a safer alternative for most situations.

Why Wrap at All?

The reasons fall into a few camps. Compression to manage swelling after injury or hard work. Protection during travel. Support during exercise (though the actual mechanical support bandages provide is debatable). Wound management. And honestly, sometimes tradition and habit.

Not all of these reasons hold up equally under scrutiny. Let's break them down.

Standing Wraps

Standing wraps are the most commonly used type in everyday barn life. They consist of a thick padding layer (usually quilted cotton wraps, pillow wraps, or no-bow wraps) covered by a flannel or fleece bandage that holds everything in place. The padding layer is non-negotiable. It distributes pressure evenly across the leg and prevents the outer bandage from creating focal pressure points.

Legitimate uses for standing wraps include:

  • Post-exercise recovery to minimize filling in legs prone to stocking up
  • Protecting and stabilizing wound dressings
  • Providing light compression after veterinary procedures
  • Supporting the opposite limb when a horse is favoring an injury (the "good" leg bears extra load and benefits from support)

Standing wraps extend from just below the knee (or hock) to the fetlock, sometimes including the pastern depending on the situation. The padding should be smooth, wrinkle-free, and extend at least a half inch beyond the bandage at both the top and bottom edges. That lip of padding prevents the bandage edge from digging into the skin.

Exercise Bandages

Exercise bandages, sometimes called polo wraps, are stretchy fleece wraps applied directly to the leg without a padding layer. They're thinner and more form-fitting than standing wraps, designed to provide some protection and mild support during riding.

The controversy around polo wraps is real and growing. Because there's no padding layer to distribute pressure, any unevenness in the wrap translates directly to the structures underneath. A 2014 study published in the Equine Veterinary Journal found that even experienced equestrians showed significant variation in the tension they applied when wrapping, and that wraps applied too tightly increased temperature in the superficial digital flexor tendon. Elevated tendon temperature, even by a few degrees, has been linked to tendon cell damage in laboratory settings.

Many sport horse riders have shifted toward boots (open-front jumping boots, splint boots, sport medicine boots) precisely because they eliminate the skill-dependent variable of wrapping tension. A boot either fits or it doesn't. It's harder to get catastrophically wrong.

If you do use polo wraps, they should be applied with consistent, moderate tension, spiral downward, cross behind the fetlock, then spiral back up. No wrinkles. No gaps. And take them off immediately after riding. They're not meant to stay on for hours.

Shipping Boots and Wraps

Trailering is where leg protection makes the most intuitive sense. A horse in a moving trailer can scramble, step on itself, or catch a leg on a divider. Shipping boots are padded, Velcro-closure protectors that cover from above the knee or hock down to the coronary band. Some extend over the heel bulbs.

Shipping wraps are the bandage-based alternative: thick padding plus stable bandages applied more extensively than standing wraps, often covering the knee or hock and extending down over the pastern and heel. They provide excellent protection but take longer to apply and require skill to do correctly.

For most people and most situations, commercially made shipping boots are the smarter choice. They go on fast, they're hard to apply incorrectly, and they protect a wider area than most people manage with wraps. The one drawback: cheap shipping boots with thin padding and weak Velcro can slip during travel, which defeats the purpose entirely. Invest in quality ones.

The Anatomy of a Bandage Bow

Bandage bow is tendon damage caused by improper wrapping. The name is somewhat misleading because it has nothing to do with the bowed tendons caused by athletic strain, though the end result looks similar: swelling along the back of the cannon bone where the superficial digital flexor tendon runs.

What actually happens is this. Uneven or excessive pressure from a bandage restricts blood flow to a localized area of the tendon. Tendons already have limited blood supply (which is why tendon injuries heal so slowly). Compress that supply further and you get ischemic damage. The tendon fibers swell, become inflamed, and if the wrap stays on long enough, actual fiber disruption can occur.

The most common causes:

  • Wrapping too tightly (especially with elastic bandages that tighten further as the horse moves)
  • Uneven tension, particularly creating a tight band in the middle of the wrap
  • Wrinkles in the padding that create pressure ridges
  • Leaving wraps on too long, especially if the leg swells underneath
  • Skipping the padding layer entirely with non-stretch bandages

Proper Standing Wrap Technique

Step by step, because this matters.

1. Start with clean, dry legs. Inspect for heat, swelling, or wounds before covering anything up. Wrapping over an unnoticed problem is a recipe for disaster.

2. Apply the padding. Begin at the inside of the cannon bone, just below the knee. Wrap around the leg from front to outside to back to inside (counterclockwise on the left leg, clockwise on the right, when viewed from behind). Each layer should overlap the previous one by about 50 percent. The padding should be smooth and snug but not tight. It extends from below the knee to just below the fetlock, with a half inch of extra padding at top and bottom.

3. Apply the outer bandage. Start in the same spot, same direction. The bandage should be rolled so that it unrolls directly against the leg (not pulling away from it, which forces you to apply more tension). Wrap with even, moderate tension. You should be able to slide a finger under the top edge when finished. Spiral down to the fetlock, then back up. Secure with Velcro, tape, or bandage clips. Never tie a knot directly over a tendon or bone.

4. Check your work. Run your hand down the entire wrap. Feel for lumps, ridges, or areas that seem tighter than others. The wrap should feel uniformly snug. Not loose enough to slip, not tight enough to indent the padding when you press.

5. Set a time limit. Standing wraps should be removed and reapplied every 12 hours at minimum. Many vets recommend every 8 hours for horses on stall rest with bandaged legs. Remove them, let the legs breathe, check the skin, rewrap if needed.

When Not to Wrap

This part is just as important as knowing how to wrap. There are situations where leaving the legs bare is the better call.

Healthy legs on a horse that doesn't stock up: If the horse's legs are clean and tight after work, wrapping "for prevention" isn't adding value and introduces risk for no benefit.

Hot, humid weather: Wraps trap heat. Tendons are vulnerable to thermal damage. Wrapping legs in the middle of summer during turnout is counterproductive.

Inexperienced hands: This sounds harsh, but it's true. A badly applied wrap is worse than no wrap. If you haven't been taught by someone experienced and practiced on a patient horse (or better yet, a leg model), don't bandage a leg unsupervised. Use boots instead.

Turnout: Wraps and mud are enemies. Moisture wicks into the padding, the wrap loosens or shifts, and you've got a soggy mess sliding down the leg. Turnout boots designed for the purpose are far more appropriate if the horse needs leg protection outside.

The Boot Alternative

The boot industry exists partly because wrapping is a skill and a lot of horse owners don't have it. Modern sport medicine boots, standing wraps with built-in padding and Velcro closures, ceramic therapy boots, and magnetic boots have all expanded the options.

Boots aren't perfect. Cheap ones rub. Ill-fitting ones slip. Some trap heat worse than bandages. But the floor for error is much higher than with wraps. A boot that's one size too big is annoying. A wrap that's applied with three times too much tension in one spot can damage a tendon.

For trail riders, casual riders, and anyone not dealing with a medical situation that specifically requires bandaging, boots are the pragmatic choice. Save the wrapping skills for when they're genuinely needed, and when you use them, do it right.

How tight should a standing wrap be?

You should be able to slide one finger under the top and bottom edges of the finished bandage. The wrap should feel snug and uniform when you run your hand over it, but not so tight that the padding feels compressed or indented.
