Leg Wrapping Technique: How to Bandage a Horse's Leg Safely
Wrapping a horse's legs looks simple until you do it wrong and spend the next three hours worrying about whether you just created a tendon injury with a piece of fleece. I'm only half joking. A well-applied wrap supports, protects, and stays put through an entire ride or a full night in the stall. A badly applied one can cause the very injuries it was supposed to prevent. Bowed tendons. Pressure sores. Restricted circulation. Necrosis, in extreme cases. The stakes are real, the margin for error is thinner than people realize, and "close enough" is not a concept that applies here. So let's talk about how to actually do this right, from the ground up.
Polo Wraps vs. Standing Wraps: Two Completely Different Tools
These are not interchangeable. They serve different functions, use different materials, follow different application protocols, and get used in different contexts. Mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes in horse care, and the consequences range from "doesn't work" to "actively harmful." Understanding the distinction is foundational.
Polo Wraps
Polo wraps are stretchy fleece bandages, typically nine to twelve feet long, designed for use during exercise. They provide mild compression, cushioning against interference injuries where the horse clips one leg with another during movement, and some degree of thermal support to the tendons during work. What they do not provide is significant structural support. If your horse has a compromised suspensory, a healing tendon lesion, or any situation requiring real mechanical stabilization during exercise, you want purpose-built sport medicine boots, not polo wraps. The AAEP's recommendations on exercise bandaging are clear: fleece polo wraps offer protection from impact but should not be relied upon for therapeutic support of injured structures.
What polo wraps are legitimately good for: cushioning the cannon bone and tendons against brushing and overreach strikes, providing light compression that may improve proprioceptive awareness, keeping the superficial digital flexor tendon warm during work in cold weather, and protecting against minor scrapes and abrasions during schooling. They're popular because they're cheap, they come in every color ever conceived including glitter and ombre, they fit virtually any leg from a Welsh pony to a Percheron, and they're machine washable. They also look nice, which matters more than people admit.
Standing Wraps
Standing wraps are used when the horse is stationary, whether in a stall, on a trailer, or being managed for a medical condition. They consist of two layers: a thick quilted or cotton padding layer (the pillow wrap, sometimes called a no-bow bandage) wrapped directly against the leg, then an outer bandage layer of stable knit or flannel material that holds the padding in place and provides compression.
The applications are numerous. Post-exercise recovery in performance programs. Managing stocking up (dependent edema) in horses on stall rest. Protecting and compressing a wound. Holding a poultice or medicated pad against the leg. Shipping protection during trailer travel. Post-surgical bandaging per veterinary instructions. They are a fundamental clinical tool, and Texas A&M's equine hospital uses standing wraps on the vast majority of its inpatient cases at some point during treatment.
The two-layer system matters enormously. The padding distributes the outer bandage's compression evenly across the leg's surface. Without it, the outer bandage would create concentrated pressure ridges over bony prominences and tendon margins, which is precisely how bandage injuries happen. Never skip the padding. Ever.
How to Apply Polo Wraps Correctly
Start with a clean, dry, debris-free leg and a neatly rolled wrap. If the wrap is balled up in a heap at the bottom of your tack trunk, roll it first. Trying to apply an unrolled polo wrap is an exercise in frustration and bad results. Roll it with the Velcro closure on the inside, so it feeds out smoothly as you wrap.
Unroll the first four to six inches and place the leading end on the outside of the cannon bone, just below the knee, angled slightly downward toward the fetlock. Hold it in place with your thumb and begin wrapping around the leg with your dominant hand, keeping the roll snug against the leg as it unrolls.
Direction matters, and this is where people argue at every clinic. The standard accepted technique, backed by equine veterinary texts and farrier school curricula alike, is to wrap from front to back on the outside of the leg. On the left legs, that means wrapping counterclockwise when you're facing the front of the horse. On the right legs, clockwise. The biomechanical reasoning: wrapping in this direction means the bandage tension crosses the front of the cannon bone, which is hard bone that handles pressure well, and the bandage itself lies flat along the back of the leg where the flexor tendons run. Wrapping in the opposite direction concentrates tension directly over the tendons, which is softer tissue that compresses under load. Cornell University's equine hospital teaching materials specifically recommend the front-to-back-on-outside convention for minimizing tendon pressure.
Spiral down the cannon bone, overlapping each layer by approximately half the bandage width. Consistent overlap is critical. Too much overlap builds unnecessary bulk. Too little leaves gaps where the wrap can shift and bunch. Half-width overlap distributes compression evenly and creates a smooth, uniform surface.
At the fetlock, you make a decision. For exercise wraps, the figure-eight technique is standard: the bandage passes behind and below the fetlock joint, crosses the front, comes around again, forming an X pattern that locks the wrap around the joint and prevents downward migration during work. Some people wrap straight down, make a single pass under the fetlock, and come back up. Both work. The figure-eight is more secure and less likely to slip during vigorous exercise, which is why it's preferred for anything beyond light flat work.
After the fetlock, spiral back up the cannon bone to just below the knee. The Velcro closure should end up on the outside of the leg, never directly over the tendons at the back and never on the bony front surface of the cannon where it could create a focal pressure point. Fold the Velcro flat and smooth.
The rules that cannot be broken:
- Even tension throughout. Every single layer. This is the single most important variable in leg wrapping. Uneven tension creates pressure gradients. Pressure gradients compress soft tissue unevenly. Uneven compression over the superficial digital flexor tendon is exactly how bandage bows happen. Each revolution of the wrap should feel identical to the one before it. Not tighter at the bottom. Not looser at the top. The same.
- Not too tight. You should be able to slide one finger, snugly but without force, under the top edge of the finished wrap. If the wrap is visibly compressing the leg, creating an indentation, or the horse shifts uncomfortably while you're applying it, it is too tight. Unwrap. Start over.
- No wrinkles. Zero. None. A wrinkle in a polo wrap is a concentrated pressure ridge sitting directly against the leg for the entire duration of the ride. Under the compression of the wrap itself plus the dynamic forces of movement, that wrinkle can create a localized injury in an hour of work. If the wrap bunches, do not try to smooth it out by pulling it tighter. Unwrap back to the wrinkle. Lay it flat. Continue.
- Remove after exercise. Polo wraps are not standing wraps. They are not designed for extended wear in a stall. The fleece material retains heat and moisture, the compression is not appropriate for a resting leg, and a polo wrap that shifts while the horse moves around in its stall becomes a tourniquet waiting to happen. Work is done, wraps come off. Period.
How to Apply Standing Wraps Correctly
Standing wraps begin with the padding layer, and the padding layer begins with a clean leg. Run your hand down the cannon bone and over the tendons. Feel for debris, shavings, sand, burrs, anything that doesn't belong. Brush if needed. This isn't fussiness. A single wood shaving trapped under twelve hours of compression becomes a pressure wound.
Take your pillow wrap and position it around the leg from just below the knee to the fetlock. The padding should be smooth and wrinkle-free, wrapped snugly but not tightly, with the edges overlapping by at least a couple inches to prevent gaps. The padding must extend slightly beyond where the outer bandage will sit, both above and below. This is critical. If the outer bandage edge sits on bare leg without padding underneath, that edge becomes a tourniquet line. The padding acts as a buffer, transitioning the compression gradually rather than creating a sharp pressure cliff at the bandage margin. Merck Veterinary Manual's section on equine bandaging techniques specifically flags bandage-edge pressure as a primary mechanism of iatrogenic bandage injury.
Once the padding is smooth, uniform, and in place, apply the outer stable bandage using the same spiral technique: front to back on the outside, half-width overlap, even tension, working from just below the knee to the fetlock and back up. Standing bandages are typically made of non-stretch or low-stretch knit, which provides a built-in safety margin. It is physically harder to over-tighten a non-stretch bandage than a stretchy polo wrap. Harder, but not impossible. Maintain even tension and let the material do its job.
Standing wraps must be checked and rewrapped at minimum every twelve hours. Texas A&M's equine clinical protocols mandate twice-daily bandage assessment for all hospitalized patients, and your at-home management should match that standard. Bandages shift. Padding compresses and loses its cushioning over time. The horse moves around, lies down, gets up, shifts weight. What was a perfectly applied wrap at morning feeding can be a bunched, migrated disaster by evening. Check it. If it's shifted, rewrap it. If you're too tired to rewrap it, take it off entirely. A bare leg is safer than a bad bandage.
Common Errors That Cause Real Damage
The bandage bow. This is the one that keeps people up at night, and it should. A bandage applied with uneven tension, typically too tight in one spot or with a wrinkle creating a focal pressure ridge, can compress the superficial digital flexor tendon enough to cause inflammation, swelling, and a palpable enlargement that looks and feels like a true bowed tendon. Because it essentially is one. The bandage created the insult. The tendon responded with inflammation and edema. The resulting thickening can take weeks to resolve with cold therapy and controlled exercise. In severe cases, or if the offending bandage was left on for an extended period, the damage can include actual fiber disruption within the tendon. Cornell's sports medicine service has documented cases of bandage-induced tendon injury requiring the same rehabilitation protocols as traumatic bows. This is entirely, completely, one hundred percent preventable with proper technique.
Wrapping over debris. A grain of sand. A single wood shaving. A seed head from hay. Under eight hours of compression against the back of a cannon bone, these tiny objects create focused pressure injuries that progress from irritation to skin breakdown to open wound. Always clean the leg first. Always run your hand over it to feel for anything your eyes missed. Good wound cleaning habits apply here too.
Leaving wraps on too long. Polo wraps come off when the ride ends. Standing wraps get checked and redone every twelve hours. Shipping wraps come off when the horse is unloaded. There is no category of leg wrap that belongs on a horse indefinitely without monitoring. The leg underneath is dynamic. It swells, it shrinks, it changes shape with position and activity. The wrap is static. It doesn't adapt. The mismatch between a changing leg and an unchanging wrap is how compression injuries develop over time.
Wrapping only one leg. If you're bandaging for support, compression, or protection, wrap the contralateral leg too. The horse instinctively loads the unbandaged leg differently when the bandaged leg feels altered, whether from the compression itself or from the weight of the wrap material. Asymmetric loading over hours to days, particularly during stall rest when the horse isn't moving much, can stress the unbandaged limb. UC Davis researchers have documented contralateral limb complications in horses on extended unilateral bandaging protocols, including support-limb laminitis in severe cases. For shipping, wrap all four. Always.
Substituting the wrong materials. Human ACE bandages from the medicine cabinet have far more stretch and far less width than equine bandages. They over-tighten easily and create narrow pressure bands. Vet wrap (cohesive bandage) applied directly against the skin without padding can shrink as the adhesive contracts. Duct tape "bandages" happen more often than anyone wants to admit and should never happen at all. Use materials designed for equine legs. They exist for a reason.
Alternatives Worth Considering
Sport medicine boots like Professional's Choice SMBs, Iconoclast orthopedic boots, or similar engineered products have largely replaced polo wraps for exercise protection among riders who value consistency and ease of application. They're faster to put on, nearly impossible to apply incorrectly, and provide more uniform compression and support than any hand-applied wrap. They're worth every penny if bandaging makes you anxious or if you're wrapping on a time crunch before a lesson.
For shipping, dedicated shipping boots with integrated padding and velcro closures have largely replaced standing wraps in many barns. They protect from the coronary band to above the knee or hock, they go on in seconds, and they eliminate the technique-dependent risk entirely. They're not as adjustable as a proper standing wrap and they don't work for medical applications, but for simple transport protection they're excellent.
Neither alternative eliminates the need to know how to wrap. Veterinary situations, wound management, poultice application, post-surgical care. Every well-stocked equine first aid kit should include bandaging supplies. These all require proper bandaging and there is no boot that replaces a correctly applied standing wrap over a medicated pad. Learn the skill. Practice on a calm, patient horse or on a fence post or table leg until the spiral motion is automatic and your tension stays uniform without conscious effort. Your horse's tendons, which are spectacularly unforgiving of mistakes, will thank you.
