Overview

Skin damage caused by photodynamic agents that accumulate in the skin and react with UV light to cause cell damage. Three types: primary (ingestion of photosensitizing plants like St. John's wort, buckwheat, or alsike clover), hepatogenous (impaired hepatic excretion of phylloerythrin due to liver disease; most clinically significant), and idiopathic. Affects unpigmented/white skin only.

Signs & Symptoms

Erythema, edema, and pain of unpigmented skin areas (white markings on face, legs); progresses to oozing, crusting, and sloughing of necrotic skin; horse is painful and may be photophobic; hepatogenous type also shows jaundice, weight loss, elevated liver enzymes; severely affected skin may slough in sheets
