Glandulae salivariae
The equine salivary glands include three major paired glands: the parotid (largest, located below the ear), the mandibular/submaxillary (medial to the mandible), and the sublingual (beneath the tongue). The parotid gland wraps around the base of the ear and is traversed by the facial nerve and external carotid artery. Horses are unique in that salivation is entirely reflexive; triggered by chewing; and does not occur in anticipation of food. The large volume of bicarbonate-rich saliva is essential for buffering the continuously secreting gastric acid.
Horses produce 10-12 liters of saliva per day (up to 40 liters in horses eating hay). Saliva is secreted only during chewing (not continuously). Equine saliva is rich in bicarbonate, which buffers stomach acid; this is why continuous access to forage is protective against gastric ulcers. The three major paired salivary glands are the parotid, mandibular (submaxillary), and sublingual.
Accumulation of saliva in the subcutaneous tissue following rupture of a salivary duct or gland. Most commonly involves the sublingual or parotid gland.
Melanocytic tumors affecting the parotid gland region, particularly common in older gray horses (80% of gray horses over 15 years develop melanomas).
Inflammation of the salivary glands, which may be infectious (bacterial, viral) or secondary to duct obstruction by sialoliths (salivary calculi).
Accumulation of saliva in the subcutaneous tissue following rupture of a salivary duct or gland. Most commonly involves the sublingual or parotid gland. Signs include: Soft, fluctuant, painless swelling in the intermandibular space or parotid region; may slowly enlarge; aspiration yields viscous mucoid fluid (saliva)
Melanocytic tumors affecting the parotid gland region, particularly common in older gray horses (80% of gray horses over 15 years develop melanomas). Signs include: Firm nodular mass near parotid gland; may affect facial nerve causing lip droop; dysphagia if large; dark pigmented cut surface on biopsy
Inflammation of the salivary glands, which may be infectious (bacterial, viral) or secondary to duct obstruction by sialoliths (salivary calculi). Signs include: Painful swelling in parotid or mandibular region; fever; difficulty chewing; excessive salivation (ptyalism); reluctance to eat
