The canter is one of those gaits that feels magical when it's right and deeply wrong when it isn't. Riders talk about leads and flying changes and counter-canter like these are separate topics, but they all come back to the same thing: understanding which legs are doing what, and when. The footfall sequence isn't trivia. It's the skeleton key to half the problems riders struggle with, from missed leads to crooked departures to that bewildering moment when your horse swaps behind but not in front and suddenly you're riding something that feels like a broken shopping cart.

The Three-Beat Rhythm

Canter is a three-beat gait with a moment of suspension. That's the textbook definition, and it's accurate, but it doesn't really capture what's happening. Let me paint the picture.

On the left lead, the sequence goes like this: right hind lands first (beat one), then the left hind and right front land together as a diagonal pair (beat two), then the left front lands last (beat three). After the left front pushes off, all four feet are briefly in the air. That's the suspension phase. Then the right hind catches the horse again and the whole cycle repeats.

On the right lead, mirror everything. Left hind starts it, right hind and left front land together, right front lands last.

The "lead" leg, the one that appears to reach furthest forward, is actually the last leg to hit the ground before suspension. It's the leading front leg. But here's what a lot of people miss: the hind leg on the same side as the lead is also reaching further forward than its opposite. So when someone says "left lead canter," both the left front AND the left hind are the leading legs on their respective ends.

This matters more than you think. Because the lead isn't just about which front leg reaches forward. The whole horse is organized asymmetrically in canter. The leading side is doing different work than the trailing side. The trailing hind leg bears the initial load of each stride, essentially catching the horse's entire mass as it returns from the airborne phase. That's a tremendous amount of force funneling through one limb, which is partly why horses with hind-end weakness sometimes resist picking up a particular lead.

Why Leads Matter

When a horse canters in a circle or around a turn, you want the inside legs leading. Left lead for left turns, right lead for right turns. This isn't arbitrary. The leading legs reach further under the body and provide lateral balance through the turn. A horse on the wrong lead through a turn feels unbalanced, stiff, and frankly a little scary if you're going fast.

Young or green horses often pick up whatever lead they feel like, and sometimes it's not the one you asked for. That's normal. They need to develop the strength and coordination to strike off on a specific lead from a trot or walk cue. It takes time and correct riding.

Some horses have a preferred lead, a "good side" and a "bad side." This is incredibly common and usually reflects asymmetry in the horse's body. Maybe the right hind is a little weaker, so striking off on the left lead (which requires the right hind to initiate the first beat) is harder. Or maybe there's a subtle stiffness through the ribcage on one side. Working through this asymmetry is a huge part of basic dressage training, and it's not just about making the horse ambidextrous for show purposes. A horse that can't comfortably canter on both leads has a physical limitation that will eventually cause problems.

I've known horses who would pick up the wrong lead so consistently on one rein that their riders just assumed the horse "couldn't" do it. Nine times out of ten, a chiropractor or bodyworker found something: a pelvis rotated slightly, a sacroiliac issue, tight longissimus muscles on one side. Fix the body, and suddenly the "impossible" lead appears. Not always overnight, because the horse also needs to rebuild confidence in using that weaker side, but the change can be remarkable.

The Canter Depart: Where It All Begins

Understanding the footfall sequence transforms how you ride canter transitions. The depart doesn't start with the front legs. It starts with the outside hind. That single fact explains why every dressage instructor on the planet tells you to use your outside leg behind the girth to ask for canter.

Your outside leg sliding back signals the horse to engage the outside hind leg, which initiates beat one. Your inside leg at the girth maintains forward impulsion and bend. Your inside rein asks for a whisper of flexion toward the lead. And your outside rein prevents the horse from falling out through the shoulder or popping into a faster trot instead of a clean depart.

Sloppy departs, where the horse rushes into a running trot for three strides before falling into canter, almost always trace back to one of two issues: the rider didn't prepare the outside hind (no half halt, no engagement before asking), or the horse lacks the strength to push off cleanly from a balanced position. The fix for both is the same: better preparation, slower process, and patience measured in weeks rather than minutes.

Counter-Canter: Intentionally "Wrong"

Counter-canter is when the horse canters on the "outside" lead, left lead on a right-turning track, or right lead on a left-turning track. And before you say "that sounds like a mistake," hear me out. Counter-canter is a legitimate and valuable training exercise that shows up in dressage tests starting at Second Level.

The whole point of counter-canter is balance and obedience. When a horse can maintain the left lead while tracking right, without breaking to trot, without swapping leads, and without falling onto the forehand, that horse has a serious degree of self-carriage and body control. It requires the horse to stay organized in the canter despite the direction of travel telling his body to switch.

For the rider, counter-canter demands quiet, consistent aids. You can't be wiggling around up there or giving conflicting signals, because the horse is already in a slightly counterintuitive situation. Your outside leg stays back to maintain the lead, your weight stays centered or very slightly toward the lead side, and you keep a gentle flexion toward the leading leg. The horse should feel like he's cantering in a straight line even though the track curves.

Start with shallow loops off the rail. Five meters in, five meters back. If the horse holds the lead through that gentle curve, gradually deepen the loops over weeks. Full 20-meter circles in counter-canter come later, much later, and only when the horse can handle shallow work without tension or loss of rhythm.

Rushing into counter-canter before the horse has a solid, balanced true canter on both leads is a recipe for frustration. Get the basics nailed down first. A horse that can barely hold the correct lead through a 20-meter circle isn't ready for counter-canter.

Flying Changes: The Fancy Stuff

A flying change is when the horse switches leads in the air, during that suspension phase, without breaking gait. One stride he's on the left lead, next stride he's on the right lead, and he never trotted or walked in between. When it's done well, it looks effortless. The horse just swaps. Smooth as anything.

What's actually happening mechanically is pretty remarkable. During the suspension phase, the horse has to reorganize which hind leg initiates the next stride. Remember, the sequence starts with the outside hind. So to change from left lead to right lead, the horse has to switch from right-hind-first to left-hind-first, all while airborne. Both the front and hind ends have to change simultaneously for a clean change. If only the front end changes, or only the hind end, you get a disunited canter, and that's a problem we'll talk about separately.

Teaching flying changes is an art. Some horses offer them naturally, especially ex-racehorses who learned to swap leads on the track, or horses with a lot of natural athleticism. Others need careful, systematic preparation. The general approach involves establishing a very clear, prompt response to the canter aid, developing good counter-canter, and then asking for the change at a moment when the horse is balanced and attentive.

A classic method: ride a diagonal line across the arena in counter-canter, and as you approach the new track, apply the new canter aid. The horse already wants to swap (the direction of travel is suggesting it), and your aid gives permission. When the change comes, reward generously. Don't drill it. One or two good changes in a session is plenty early on.

Common issues with flying changes include late changes (hind end swaps a stride after the front), changes that are only clean in one direction, and changes that come with tension or rushing. These are all training problems, and they all trace back to either insufficient preparation or the horse not being strong enough yet. A horse that gets tense about changes often had them introduced too abruptly or was punished for mistakes during the learning process. Patience fixes most of it.

The Disunited Canter: When Things Go Sideways

Sometimes a horse ends up on one lead in front and the opposite lead behind. This is called a disunited, cross-firing, or cross-canter. It feels awful. The smooth three-beat rhythm turns into a lurching, four-beat scramble that makes both horse and rider deeply uncomfortable.

Disunited canter happens for a few reasons. The horse might have attempted a flying change and only completed half of it. Young horses sometimes lose their balance and swap one end without the other. Horses with hind-end pain or weakness may struggle to maintain a true canter and drift into disunity as compensation.

The fix is simple in theory: bring the horse back to trot (or walk, if trot feels disorganized too), rebalance, and ask for a clean canter depart. If it happens repeatedly on the same lead, investigate the physical side. Chronic disunity is rarely a training problem alone.

Feeling the Footfalls

Here's something that separates experienced riders from beginners: you can feel the canter sequence through your seat. On the left lead, your left hip gets carried slightly forward with each stride because the left side of the horse is reaching further. Your seat follows a slightly elliptical path, down, forward, up, back. That rocking motion is the three beats plus suspension.

If you can feel which lead you're on without looking down, you can give more timely aids. You can feel when the horse is about to break. You can feel when a flying change happens clean versus late behind. This proprioception takes time to develop, and the best way to develop it is riding lots of canter on lots of different horses.

A useful exercise: close your eyes briefly during canter on a safe, steady horse in an enclosed arena. Without visual input, your body tunes into the motion much faster. Feel the hip swing. Feel which seat bone advances. Two or three strides with eyes closed can teach your body more than twenty strides of watching the horse's shoulders.

For anyone just starting to learn the canter, don't get overwhelmed by all the terminology. Start by watching slow-motion video of horses cantering and counting the beats. One, two, three, air. One, two, three, air. Once you see the pattern, you'll start to feel it. And once you feel it, leads and changes and counter-canter all start to make intuitive sense.

The canter is a beautiful gait. Three beats and flight. There's a reason people who ride describe the feeling as close to flying. Understanding the mechanics doesn't take the magic out of it; if anything, it deepens the appreciation for what the horse is doing underneath you every single stride.
