It happens more often than any of us would like to admit.

Not tendon injuries. Not hock arthritis. The saddle. That piece of equipment we slap on every single ride without a second thought.

With the saddle sitting on the horse's back (no pad, girth loosely attached), you should be able to fit two to three fingers vertically between the top of the withers and the underside of the pommel. If you can barely squeeze one finger in, the saddle is too narrow or sitting too low. If you can fit your whole fist, it's too wide.

Check this with a rider in the saddle too. Weight compresses the panels and changes clearance. A saddle that looks fine empty might bridge or drop onto the withers under a rider. They are not shims, they are not correction devices, and they should not be Band-Aids for a fundamentally wrong saddle.
