Focal abscessation within the splenic parenchyma, usually hematogenous in origin (Streptococcus spp., S. equi; bastard strangles). May also occur secondary to migrating foreign bodies.

Intermittent fever; weight loss; recurrent colic; elevated fibrinogen and white cell count; hypoechoic mass within spleen on ultrasound
