Os femoris
The femur is the longest and strongest bone in the horse, extending from the hip to the stifle joint. The femoral head articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvis, connected by the accessory ligament (unique to horses). The greater and lesser trochanters are proximal muscle attachment sites. The third trochanter, a feature unique to equids, provides attachment for the superficial gluteal muscle. The distal end features the medial and lateral condyles and the trochlea for the patella.
The femur is the largest bone, surrounded by heavy musculature. Fractures in adults carry a poor prognosis.
Capital physeal fracture (young horses)
Third trochanter fracture
Usually catastrophic in adult horses due to the enormous forces involved. Foals may survive with surgical repair. Often from kicks, falls, or racing injuries.
Displacement of the femoral head from the acetabulum. Rare due to the deep socket and strong ligaments, but occurs from severe trauma.
Capital physeal fracture (young horses) Signs include: Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.
Third trochanter fracture Signs include: Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.
Usually catastrophic in adult horses due to the enormous forces involved. Foals may survive with surgical repair. Often from kicks, falls, or racing injuries. Signs include: Acute non-weight-bearing lameness; limb may appear shortened or rotated; severe swelling; crepitus; recumbency in many cases; usually euthanasia in adults.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.
Displacement of the femoral head from the acetabulum. Rare due to the deep socket and strong ligaments, but occurs from severe trauma. Signs include: Acute severe lameness; limb may appear shortened and rotated outward; inability to bear weight; clicking or popping; diagnosed on rectal palpation and imaging.; Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.
