Articulatio tarsi
A complex joint equivalent to the human ankle, composed of 6 tarsal bones (talus, calcaneus, central tarsal, third tarsal, first/second tarsal fused, fourth tarsal). Contains 4 joint levels. The proximal intertarsal joint has the most motion. The calcaneus (point of hock) provides leverage for the gastrocnemius/Achilles equivalent.

The hock is complex with multiple joint compartments. Bone spavin is one of the most common hindlimb lamenesses.
Synovial effusion (excess fluid) in the tibiotarsal (upper hock) joint. Can be from OCD, trauma, or chronic strain.
Developmental orthopedic disease where cartilage fails to convert to bone, creating loose flaps or fragments. The distal intermediate ridge of the tibia (DIRT) is the most common hock OCD location.
Swelling over the point of the hock (calcaneus) from trauma, usually from kicking walls or trailer injuries.
Degenerative joint disease of the lower hock joints (centrodistal and tarsometatarsal joints). Very common cause of hind limb lameness and poor performance.
Synovial effusion (excess fluid) in the tibiotarsal (upper hock) joint. Can be from OCD, trauma, or chronic strain. Signs include: Soft, fluctuant swelling on the dorsomedial hock (front inside); usually not painful unless underlying joint disease is present; cosmetic concern; may indicate OCD in young horses.

Signs include: Consult veterinarian for specific symptoms.; Insidious onset hindlimb lameness; worse at start of work, improves with warming up; positive to distal limb flexion test (spavin test); shortening of hind stride; resistance to collection; bony swelling on medial hock in advanced cases; hock stiffness.
