How to Fit a Bit: Sizing, Placement & Comfort Check
You can drop four hundred dollars on a custom bit and still have a miserable horse if the thing does not fit. I have watched riders cycle through bit after bit, loose ring, D-ring, French link, Waterford, never once pausing to ask whether the problem might be the size rather than the style. Bit fitting is not glamorous. But get it wrong and nothing else you do in the saddle will work properly.
Why Fit Matters So Much
The bit sits in one of the most nerve-dense areas of the horse's body. The bars (those toothless gaps between incisors and premolars), tongue, palate, and lip corners all live in the same tight space. Every one of these structures can be bruised, irritated, or outright damaged by a poorly fitting bit. The tissue has nerve density comparable to your fingertips.
Horses cannot verbalize pain. What they can do is toss their heads, gape their mouths, lean on the forehand, refuse to turn, duck behind the vertical, or mentally check out. Half the "training problems" I have encountered over the years turned out to be bit problems once someone actually investigated.
Measuring for Width
Width is the most important measurement. Also the one people botch most often.
Too narrow pinches the lips against the teeth. Too wide slides back and forth, catching the tongue and banging the palate on one side. To measure, use a commercial bit sizer or a smooth dowel rod with markings. Place it where the bit would sit, let the horse close its lips, mark where each corner falls. That distance is your mouth width.
For most bits, aim for about a quarter inch (5 to 6mm) of clearance on each side between lip corner and bit ring. A horse measuring 5 inches across the mouth typically takes a 5.5-inch bit. Loose ring snaffles need slightly more room because the ring rotates through the mouthpiece hole; too tight and it pinches the lip on every contact. Full cheek and D-ring bits can be fitted a touch closer since the fixed cheekpiece sits flat against the face without that pinching mechanism. Baucher bits hang from the bridle cheekpieces and sit very quietly, which shifts the width tolerance calculation.
Mouthpiece Thickness
Thicker equals gentler, right? Broadly, yes. With a critical exception: if the horse's mouth is small, a thick mouthpiece fills all the space between tongue and palate. A 21mm mouthpiece in a mouth with 25mm of vertical clearance is not kind. It is claustrophobic.
Horses with thick fleshy tongues already have limited space and usually prefer thinner mouthpieces (14 to 16mm) with tongue relief. Horses with thin tongues and high palates handle more diameter without issue. You can assess this roughly by sliding your thumb along the bars with the mouth open. Feel how much room exists between tongue and hard palate. Tight? Go thinner.
Material adds a variable. Stainless steel at 16mm is rigid, unyielding 16mm. Rubber or synthetic at 16mm compresses under tongue pressure, effectively occupying less space. Factor that compliance into your decision.
Checking the Fit Once It Is In
Bit in the mouth, bridle attached. Here is what to evaluate:
Corner wrinkles: The old "one to two wrinkles" guideline works as a starting point for snaffles. You want the bit high enough to avoid banging teeth, not so high that it pulls the lips into a permanent grin. One gentle wrinkle is reasonable for most horses. Three wrinkles means it is cranked too high.
Tongue space: A thick single-jointed snaffle occupies more room than a thin French link. Horses with fleshy tongues often settle with bits that offer tongue relief: a port, a lozenge, or a double-jointed design that drapes over the tongue rather than pressing straight down. You cannot see the tongue from outside, so read behavior instead. Excessive tongue movement, sticking the tongue out, or getting it over the bit are all red flags.
Palate clearance: Single-jointed snaffles create a "nutcracker" action where the joint pokes upward under rein pressure. Horses with low palates find this genuinely painful. If your horse opens its mouth dramatically every time you pick up the reins on a single joint, try a French link or lozenge that lies flatter across the tongue.
Signs Your Bit Does Not Fit
Horses are honest communicators if you pay attention:
- Head tossing or shaking when you pick up contact. Not attitude. Discomfort.
- Mouth gaping with rein use. A flash noseband closes the mouth but does not fix the underlying problem.
- Tongue issues: tongue hanging out, going over the bit, or chewing beyond normal relaxed mouthing.
- Leaning or pulling: a horse in pain sometimes bears down on the bit to stabilize pressure rather than responding to half-halts. Feels like tug-of-war.
- Contact avoidance: ducking behind the vertical, curling up, refusing to stretch into the bridle. The horse is trying to escape the bit entirely.
- One-sidedness: turning fine one direction but bracing the other can indicate uneven bit positioning or a dental issue on that side.
- Rubs and sores: check lip corners, bars, and tongue regularly. Raw spots, thickened skin, or calluses mean friction where there should be none.
Snaffle Variations and Their Fitting Nuances
Not all snaffles fit identically. A loose ring slides freely through the mouthpiece holes, so the bit is never completely still. Some horses find the movement soothing. Others hate it. Horses that fuss endlessly in a loose ring often go dead quiet in an eggbutt or D-ring where the mouthpiece-to-cheekpiece junction stays fixed.
Full cheek snaffles add lateral guidance by pressing against the face during opening rein aids. They require keepers (small leather loops on the cheekpieces) to stop the upper arm from rotating forward and poking the horse. Without keepers, they can snag on things. Safety hazard.
Leverage bits (curbs, pelhams, kimberwicks) bring different fitting demands. The curb chain or strap must sit in the chin groove without pinching, twisting, or riding up onto the lower lip. Shanked bits amplify rein pressure, so the entire assembly needs to hang correctly for the leverage ratio to function as designed rather than jabbing the bars or compressing the tongue unevenly.
The Dental Connection
Before blaming the bit, check the teeth. Wolf teeth are the number one dental cause of bit discomfort. These small vestigial premolars erupt around age two or three right where the bit contacts the bars. Most equine dentists recommend removing them before any bitted work begins.
Sharp enamel points on the premolars cause problems too, especially if the bit pushes cheek tissue against those edges. Regular dental floats every 6 to 12 months keep the mouth comfortable. The AAEP recommends annual dental exams for all horses, with more frequent checks for young horses whose mouths are still developing.
After recent dental work, give the mouth a few days before reintroducing the bit. Sore gums plus metal pressure creates a bad experience the horse will remember.
Material Matters
Stainless steel: the standard. Durable, easy to clean, neutral taste. Copper and sweet iron encourage salivation, which some riders like because a wet mouth tends to be a relaxed mouth. Copper is softer than steel and wears faster, so inspect copper-mouthed bits regularly for rough spots or thin sections.
Rubber and synthetic bits are gentler on tissue but tend to be thicker, potentially problematic for small mouths or thick tongues. They degrade over time. Check for teeth marks that create sharp edges. A chewed-up happy mouth bit is no longer happy.
Titanium is lighter and warms to body temperature faster than steel, which some horses prefer. Especially relevant on cold mornings when a frozen steel mouthpiece is nobody's idea of fun. Warming any metal bit in your hands before bridling in winter is a small courtesy your horse notices.
When to Get Help
Tried multiple bits with no improvement? Bring in professionals. An equine dentist can scope the mouth and spot issues invisible from outside. A qualified bit fitter (a real specialty) can assess oral conformation and recommend specific designs. Some tack shops offer bit trials before purchase.
And if it is not the bit at all? Consider whether auxiliary equipment like martingales might be masking a problem rather than solving it. Sometimes the answer is more training, more patience, or a conversation with your vet about pain beyond the mouth: ulcers, back soreness, saddle fit. The bit is one piece of a bigger puzzle. But it is the piece living inside your horse's mouth, so getting it right matters enormously.
