Martingales Explained: Types, Uses, and Proper Fitting
Walk into any warm-up ring at a show and you'll spot them everywhere. Martingales attached to horses of all sizes, in every discipline from hunters to eventers. But here's the thing most people won't tell you: a solid chunk of those riders couldn't explain why they're using one. It's just what they've always done, or what their trainer told them to grab before they walked through the in-gate. So let's actually break this down, because the mechanics matter more than most folks realize.
What Is a Martingale, Anyway?
At its core, a martingale is an auxiliary piece of tack designed to prevent a horse from raising its head above a certain point. That's it. It's not a training shortcut. It's not a fix for a horse that won't come on the bit. It's a piece of equipment that sets a physical boundary for head carriage, and when used correctly, it can be genuinely useful for safety and communication.
There are two main types you'll encounter: the running martingale and the standing martingale. They look similar at a glance, both attach to the girth, run up between the front legs, and connect through the neckstrap. But they work in fundamentally different ways, and choosing the wrong one for your situation is more common than you'd think.
The concept has been around for centuries. Historical references to martingale-style equipment show up in cavalry manuals dating back to the 1700s, and variations appear across nearly every mounted tradition worldwide. The name itself likely derives from riders in Martigues, a town in southern France, though etymologists still argue about that one. What's not debatable is that horsemen figured out a long time ago that controlling vertical head movement was sometimes a matter of survival, particularly on horses ridden into battle or across rough terrain at speed.
The Running Martingale
A running martingale splits into two straps partway up the chest, each ending in a ring. Your reins pass through those rings. When the horse carries its head at a normal, working height, the martingale hangs loose and does absolutely nothing. It only engages when the horse throws its head up past a certain angle, at which point the rings put downward pressure on the reins, which then act on the bit.
This is important to understand: the running martingale works through the rider's hands. It changes the angle of rein pressure rather than applying force on its own. A skilled rider can still give and take normally because the martingale only activates in those moments when the horse's head goes too high. Polo players rely on standing martingales almost universally. The sport demands that riders use one hand for the mallet, making rein control limited at best. A standing martingale keeps the horse from throwing its head into the rider's face during fast stops, sharp turns, and the chaotic near-collisions that define a typical chukker. You'll also see them in some hunter rings and on horses being retrained that have a dangerous head-tossing habit. Trail riders occasionally use them on horses that star-gaze dangerously in open country, though that application raises its own set of questions about whether the underlying issue is being addressed.
Fitting a Running Martingale
Getting the fit right matters more than most people realize. Too tight and you're creating constant restriction, which will make your horse brace against it or develop a false frame. Too loose and it's just flapping around doing nothing, dead weight and a potential hazard if a strap catches on something during movement.
Here's the classic fitting method: with the martingale attached to the girth and the rings held up along the reins, each ring should be able to reach into the horse's throat latch area. Some people describe it as reaching the withers, but the throat latch test is more reliable because it accounts for different neck lengths and conformations. A draft cross with a short, thick neck and a Thoroughbred with a swan neck will need entirely different adjustments even if they wear the same size martingale.
When the horse is standing with its head in a natural position, the martingale forks should have a gentle droop to them. If they're pulling the reins down at rest, you're way too tight. Texas A&M's equine science program recommends that the forks should only become taut when the horse's head rises above the point of the shoulder as viewed from the side, a simple visual check any rider can perform.
And always, always, use rein stops. Those little rubber or leather donuts sit on your reins between the bit and the martingale ring. One detail people overlook is neckstrap fit. The neckstrap keeps the whole system oriented properly. If it's too loose, it slides around and the martingale doesn't function as designed. You should be able to slide your fist between the neckstrap and the horse's neck without forcing it. But a martingale shouldn't be a permanent crutch. If your horse consistently evades the bit by going above it, that's a training issue, possibly a pain issue, that deserves investigation, not just equipment. Check the teeth. Check the bit fit. Check the saddle fit. Check for ulcers. The Merck Veterinary Manual explicitly notes that head tossing and bit evasion frequently trace to oral pathology, and Cornell's equine hospital has published case studies where chronic head-tossing resolved completely after addressing undiagnosed wolf teeth or sharp enamel points. A martingale can manage the symptom while you address the root cause, but it shouldn't be the solution.
Young horses being started over fences? Totally reasonable to use a running martingale as a safety measure while they figure out their balance. Hot horse on a trail ride who likes to giraffe at every scary object? A running martingale can keep things manageable. Polo pony? Standing martingale, no question.
Here's a test I like: ride without the martingale once a month. If your horse goes exactly the same, you might not need it anymore. If the ride falls apart, you've learned that whatever the martingale is managing hasn't been addressed yet. Either way, the information is valuable.
Common Mistakes
The biggest mistake is cranking the thing too tight. I've seen horses at shows with martingales adjusted so short that their head carriage was being dictated by the strap rather than the rider's aids. That's not training. That's restraint. It creates horses that lean on the equipment rather than learning to carry themselves, and it fundamentally undermines the communication system between horse and rider.
