Your saddle slips backward. Maybe just a touch, maybe dramatically on hills, maybe only on that one mare with mutton withers who seems personally offended by the concept of saddle stability. A breastplate might be exactly what you need. Or it might be completely unnecessary. Depends on the horse, the work, and whether your saddle actually fits in the first place.

Quick Answer: A breastplate prevents the saddle from sliding backward. Essential for horses with flat withers, round barrels, or those doing hill work, jumping, or eventing. Correct fit means a fist's width between chest strap and horse, straps engaging within about two inches of forward pull, and the whole apparatus sitting above the point of shoulder, never across the shoulder joint.

What Does a Breastplate Actually Do?

One job. It keeps the saddle from sliding backward. Connects the saddle's front to the horse's chest, creating a forward anchor during work that might otherwise shift everything south.

On a horse shaped like a torpedo with legs, the saddle has nothing to grip. Gravity wins. A breastplate provides the anchor that conformation does not.

When You Actually Need One

Certain builds practically demand it. Flat mutton withers. Round barrels. Many draft crosses and ponies. No amount of girthing keeps that saddle in place.

Discipline matters too. Eventers almost universally wear breastplates because cross-country involves galloping uphill, jumping solid obstacles at speed, and navigating terrain that throws serious backward and lateral forces on the saddle. A slipping saddle at cross-country speed over a solid fence can cause a rotational fall. The breastplate is standard safety equipment, not optional dress-up.

Foxhunters, trail riders on hilly ground, endurance riders, jumpers at upper levels, ropers, working cowhorse riders making hard stops and sharp turns: all benefit. If you are doing flatwork in an arena on a horse with decent withers and a saddle that fits, you probably do not need one. Save the money.

Types of Breastplates

Hunting breastplate (three-point): Most common in English riding. Straps run from D-rings on each side of the pommel down to a central ring on the chest. A single strap continues between the front legs to the girth. Sometimes includes a standing martingale attachment. Distributes pressure across chest and shoulders fairly evenly.

Five-point breastplate: Same concept but with additional straps creating two girth attachment points instead of one. More stability, wider force distribution. Eventers love these because they are bombproof. The saddle is not going anywhere.

Elastic breastplate: Same configurations with elastic inserts in the straps. Gives the horse more shoulder freedom, which matters for big-moving warmbloods and Thoroughbreds with sweeping strides. Shoulder guard style: Newer design wrapping the shoulder point with a padded panel instead of a narrow strap. Distributes pressure over the largest area of any breastplate type. Gaining popularity with riders whose horses have sensitive skin or history of rub marks from traditional designs.

Fitting the Hunting/Three-Point Breastplate

This is where everyone messes up. Too tight restricts the shoulder, shortens stride, potentially causes tripping. Too loose and the thing flops around, rubs, and does nothing when you actually need it.

With breastplate attached to saddle and girth: fit a fist between the chest strap and the horse's chest at the center ring. The strap sits above the point of shoulder. Never across the shoulder joint. Placing it too low restricts the shoulder's forward swing and genuinely impedes movement.

Straps running up to the saddle should be snug enough to engage before the saddle can slip but not so tight they pull the saddle forward or down onto the withers. Standing square, these straps should have just a touch of play.

The center strap between the legs keeps the chest piece positioned without pulling it downward. Too tight drops it onto the point of the chest bone. Too loose lets it ride up toward the throat when the horse lowers its head.

Thirty-second test that tells you everything: have someone hold the horse. Walk to the front, grab the center ring, pull straight forward. The saddle should not move. If it shifts forward, the breastplate is too tight. If you can pull the ring four or five inches before feeling resistance, it is too loose. Straps should engage within about two inches of pull.

Fitting a Five-Point Breastplate

Same principles as the three-point. Two additions: girth straps must be even in tension, and overall fit must allow full neck extension without pulling against the saddle. Both girth loops sit flat with no twisting. A twisted loop concentrates pressure on a narrow leather edge, leaving rub marks and sore spots over a long ride.

Fitting a Western Breast Collar

The collar sits two to three inches above the point of shoulder. Too high presses the windpipe. Too low interferes with leg movement. Properly fitted, you can slide two fingers between collar and chest but the collar does not sway side to side when the horse moves.

The center strap to the cinch prevents upward migration. Horses with deep chests and prominent pectorals are especially prone to the collar riding up during hard stops. Check after your first few stops and adjust. Sheepskin or neoprene covers prevent rubs during sustained work. Hours of friction from bare leather on a sweaty chest equals hair loss and hot spots.

Common Fitting Mistakes

Number one: positioning too low, across or below the shoulder joints. This is not just an annoyance. It changes the horse's stride biomechanics. Number two: using a breastplate to compensate for a poorly fitting saddle. If the saddle slides because it does not fit, the breastplate is a bandage. Number four: leaving the breastplate attached between rides without inspecting it. Leather dries. Stitching frays. Elastic loses stretch. One day you need the equipment to perform and a buckle hole snaps because nobody looked at it in six months.

Material and Care

Leather needs regular cleaning and conditioning to stay supple. Stiff dried-out leather rubs. Synthetic options are lighter and easier to clean but can wear at stress points faster than quality leather.

Check stitching and hardware regularly, especially girth attachments. This is safety equipment. If it fails during work, consequences can be serious. Fraying stitches, cracked leather near buckle holes, and worn elastic all signal replacement time. The right breastplate, fitted well, quietly does its job and lets you focus on riding.
